Bathroom & Home Safety Modifications on the Treasure Coast

The practical guide to the three jobs that make a home safer for an older parent or spouse: grab bar installation, walk-in and tub-to-shower conversions, and wheelchair ramps. What each costs here, who does the work, and how to tell a handyman job from a licensed-contractor job — researched specifically for Indian River County and the surrounding coast.

Start with the job, not the jargon

When an older parent starts struggling with the tub, the stairs, or getting up from the toilet, most families don't search for an industry term — they search for the fix: grab bar installation near me, tub to shower conversion cost, wheelchair ramp installer. This guide is organized the same way, because that's also where the local search demand actually is. (A note on terminology: "aging in place" is the industry's phrase. Locally, that exact search returns home-care agencies and senior-living facilities — not contractors. The real buyers type the job name, so this site is built around the job names.)

Grab Bar Installation

The fastest, cheapest safety win in a house — a few hundred dollars, often done in one visit. Placement and stud-mounting matter more than the bar itself.

Walk-In Showers & Tub-to-Shower Conversions

The biggest-ticket safety remodel: removing a tub barrier or building a low-curb walk-in shower. Florida cost bands from real published sources.

Wheelchair Ramps

Modular aluminum vs. wood vs. threshold ramps — and why local ramp searches mostly return rental companies instead of installers.

Why this matters on the Treasure Coast

Indian River County's population is 37.3% aged 65 and over, with a median age of 55.1 (U.S. Census QuickFacts, 2026). That is structural, long-horizon demand for safety modifications — not a trend. What doesn't exist locally is a straight answer to the basic questions: what does it cost, who does it well, and who do I call first? No Treasure Coast provider publishes installed prices for grab bars, tub-to-shower conversions, or ramps. This guide is built to be that straight answer.

Who does the work — and who should

One of the most useful things to know before you call anyone: under Florida law (F.S. 489.103), contracting work under $2,500 that needs no permit and involves no licensed trade work (plumbing, electrical, structural) does not require a contractor's license. Grab bars and most ramp kits fit squarely in that handyman-exempt tier. A full tub-to-shower conversion with plumbing and tile work does not — that's licensed-remodeler territory.
